Common Water Pump Types for Agricultural Irrigation Systems

1. Centrifugal Water Pumps

The main job of a centrifugal water pump is to transport liquid from one place to another. Some centrifugal pumps have solids-handling capabilities, which means they can move liquids that contain solids, up to a certain size, as well as chemicals that would be disruptive to other models of water pumps.

For agricultural irrigation systems, a centrifugal pump will pump from streams, lakes, reservoirs, and shallow wells, and are often used as “booster pumps” in irrigation pipelines, making sure that water moves through the entire system at the desired speed and pressure. Before use, a centrifugal water pump must be primed, and while there are self-priming centrifugal water pumps, these models are not traditionally used with irrigation systems. Another note: while centrifugal pumps may be oriented vertically or horizontally, a horizontally-oriented centrifugal water pump is most common for agricultural irrigation applications.
